Child Passenger Safety
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 12 in the United States. But car seats and booster seats - when used and installed correctly - can significantly reduce the risk of injury and death.
Properly installed and used car seats reduce the risk of fatal injuries by as much as 71 percent for infants, and 54 percent for toddlers. But national studies show that as many as 90 percent of car seats are not installed or used properly. Because of the variety of cars and car seat designs, car seats can be complicated to install and use.
To make sure your child's car seat is safe, make an appointment with a Child Passenger Safety Technician. CPS Technicians put their knowledge to work through a wide variety of programs and activities with the goals of teaching parents and other caregivers to properly protect their children in motor vehicles and to provide "hands-on" assistance in the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts. Aspirus Keweenaw's Child Passenger Safety Technician, Jan List, RN, is available by appointment to provide individual and group education on child passenger safety as well as assistance with installation and use of child safety seats. Call Jan List, RN, at (906) 337-6528 or email jlist@aspiruskeweenaw.org for information or to schedule an appointment.
